Our flood warning service
We provide a free flood warning service for many areas at risk of flooding from rivers and the sea. In some parts of England we can also tell you when flooding from groundwater is possible. Our free flood warning service can give you advance notice of flooding and can give you time to prepare.
Understanding the Flood Warnings map
For many areas at risk of flood, we warn residents when floods are likely to occur. If you live within a shaded area on the map, then flood warnings are available to you.
In many places we provide both flood alerts and flood warnings. But in some places we can only provide flood alerts. Click on the map within a shaded area to find out if there is a flood warning or alert in place from groundwater, rivers or the sea.
Flood Warning Areas
If your home or business is within a purple shaded area on the map this means that we can provide you with flood warnings.
We issue flood warnings to specific areas when flooding is expected.
If you receive a flood warning you should take immediate action.
Flood Alert Areas
If your home or business is within a pink shaded area on the map this means that we can provide you with flood alerts.
We issue flood alerts when flooding is possible. Flood alerts cover larger areas than flood warnings and are issued more frequently. If you receive a flood alert you should be prepared for flooding and to take action.
If a flood alert for groundwater is available to you this does not mean that your property is definitely at risk. It is very difficult to predict the exact location of flooding from groundwater as it is often related to local geology. To help people, we provide flood alerts for large areas that could be affected if groundwater levels were high.
